Vehicle tax exemption
The Motor Vehicle Tax Act (KraftStG) provides for a temporary tax exemption for purely electric vehicles:

The tax exemption for electric vehicles is valid for up to 10 years if first registered between May 18, 2011, and December 31, 2025 (Section 3d, Paragraph 1 of the Motor Vehicle Tax Act). It is granted until December 31, 2030, at the latest. After this period, the motor vehicle tax payable is reduced by 50 percent.

The tax exemption generally begins on the date of first registration of the respective vehicle. In the event of a change of ownership within the tax-exempt period, the new vehicle owner will be granted the tax exemption for the remaining period.

Hybrid vehicles, which are powered by both an electric motor and a combustion engine, are not considered electric vehicles under the Motor Vehicle Tax Act. These vehicles are not eligible for tax relief.

This also includes electric vehicles that are equipped with an internal combustion engine to extend their range (so-called range extender vehicles).
